Role overview
The Assistant Corporate Controller is a highly visible and critical position providing leadership to the company’s accounting and reporting function. This position will report into the Corporate Controller. This role will have a broad scope of responsibilities across the accounting function and have visibility across the organization. The individual must demonstrate a strong ability to interpret and apply accounting principles in accordance with U.S. GAAP, have experience managing the month-end close process, possess strong general ledger system knowledge, provide meaningful reviews and feedback on a broad array of complex matters, and have excellent project management skills. Some travel to our Digital Wholesale business unit in Dallas, Texas is expected (5-10% travel).
What you'll do
- Provide oversight for the consolidated and segment level accounting functions, including ownership over the month-end close and financial results to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of all deliverables.
- Own consolidation of the segment level financials into the CarGurus ERP. Manage execution of integration efforts to improve the efficiency of this process.
- Review monthly financial reporting packages for the Executive Team.
- Oversee the accounting for technical and complex areas, including review of associated month end journal entries and account reconciliations as needed.
- Proactively identify and assess new technical accounting issues as they arise, including review of memorandums and managing the use of specialists as needed. These may include areas such as: revenue recognition under ASC 606, share-based compensation, ASC 842 leasing, capitalized website development costs, internal use software, judgmental estimates and reserves, and annual goodwill impairment assessments.
- Oversee external audit processes, including quarterly reviews and the year-end audit.
- Review and maintain accounting policies.
- Oversee statutory audit requirements and filings.
- Prepare board materials for the Audit Committee.
- Review of Forms 10-Q/10-K/8-K in accordance with U.S. GAAP and SEC requirements.
- Review financial disclosures within quarterly and annual earnings releases, investor decks, and other communications.
- Provide accounting support for special ad-hoc projects as necessary.
What you'll bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required, CPA required.
- 8+ years of total accounting experience with increased level of responsibility.
- Big 4 public accounting experience highly preferred.
- Technology/SAAS and public company management experience highly preferred.
- Strong system skills including experience implementing, integrating, or scaling ERP system capabilities. NetSuite experience strongly desired.
- Technical accounting expertise in areas such as ASC 606 Revenue Recognition, ASC 350 Intangibles and Goodwill, ASC 805 Business Combinations, and ASC 330 Inventory.
- Ability to challenge and improve existing processes through automation and redesign.
- Strong leadership and coaching skills with experience managing and mentoring teams.
- Excel at project management including ability to establish and consistently meet deadlines of a public company.
- Motivated team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced, forward-moving environment.
