The Vice President of Data will define and drive the data strategy that powers insight and decision-making across The Atlantic, guiding a team of analysts to deliver the metrics, tools, and frameworks that serve our mission and fuel growth. As the senior data leader in the organization, this individual will serve as both a strategic partner and hands-on mentor, bringing deep expertise in team-building, analytics, and cross-functional collaboration.

This role is central to shaping The Atlantic's future. It requires a strategic, analytically minded leader who balances innovation with operational excellence, is excited about AI's potential to transform an organization, and fosters a culture where data professionals can do their best work. The VP of Data will play a pivotal role in evolving The Atlantic's decentralized, self-service analytics model and ensuring that data informs key decisions across the organization - all in close partnership with stakeholders across Editorial, Consumer Growth, and Advertising.

This position reports to the Chief Product Officer.

What You'll Do

  • Establish The Atlantic as the model for how modern media companies harness data to drive strategy, deepen audience relationships, and create new forms of journalism - anchored in a culture of experimentation you'll champion and grow.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing data team, including embedded analysts across the organization.
  • Recruit, develop, and empower analytical talent at all levels.
  • Play a pivotal role in defining company strategy, ensuring data informs roadmaps that drive business growth.
  • Champion and refine The Atlantic's decentralized/self-service data model, empowering stakeholders to access and interpret data independently.
  • Define, develop, and maintain key organizational metrics in partnership with executive leadership.
  • Serve as the executive "voice of data," translating complex insights into actionable recommendations for senior leadership.
  • Represent The Atlantic at industry conferences and in conversations with relevant third parties.

What You Bring

  • A strategic leader with both analytical rigor and collaborative instincts — someone who can build trust in data, cultivate a thriving team culture, and position the organization to make smarter decisions.
  • Curiosity about how AI can enhance analytics, decision-making, team productivity, and organization change.
  • 10+ years of experience in data, analytics, or related fields, including 5+ years managing and developing data teams.
  • Experience partnering with executive leadership to shape organizational strategy.
  • Professional experience with modern cloud data platforms (GCP preferred) and familiarity with tools like Astronomer, Fivetran, dbt Cloud, Looker, and Lytics.
  • A strong understanding of how data infrastructure, governance, and self-service models scale — and the judgment to evolve them thoughtfully.
  • Ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, from analysts to the C-suite.
  • Strong communication and mentorship skills, with a track record of developing inclusive, curious teams.
  • A genuine passion for The Atlantic's mission and journalistic values.

This position is based in New York City or Washington, D.C.

Salary Minimum: $200,000; Salary Maximum: $240,000
