Sourcegraph is a code AI platform that makes it easy to read, write, and fix code–even in big, complex code bases.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to make it so everyone codes.

A world where everyone, not just ~0.1% of the world population, codes will see faster and more broadly beneficial technological progress.

But coding is already too complex for most people to start coding, and it’s only getting worse as consumers demand more from software and code piles up. We’re making it less complex. That will make more people able to code.

Working hours

-----------------

🌎 Given that we are an all-remote company and hire almost anywhere in the world, we don’t have a particular time-zone preference for this role. However, you may need to be available for non-recurring urgent meetings outside of working hours.

Why this job is exciting

----------------------------

Cody is the best AI coding assistant today, and you'll get to help build it and get it in the hands of millions of devs. Our code intelligence, married with modern AI, is already providing a remarkable alpha experience, and you can help us unlock its full potential.

Our rapid development pace means that building and releasing our products to the market is a unique challenge, from overseeing the release of all components supporting Cody as well as Cody itself, building the tools to provide a self-service experience to all teammates, to taking part in building a quality infrastructure to monitor Cody quality.

We are looking for a Senior Release Engineer to join the Developer Infrastructure team to take our release process to the next level, turning it into a seamless process for everyone, maximizing the ownership of individual teams with a platform based approach.

By joining our team, you will directly impact how Cody and our Code Intelligence platform is released to the world and be at the crossroads of all Sourcegraph teams by building mission critical tools to support our mission.  If you’re passionate about enhancing developers’ productivity and are excited to be a part of a dynamic team pushing the boundaries of technology, then this role is for you.

📅 Within one month, you will…

  • Begin building relationships with cross-functional teams, including the Cody development team and other stakeholders.
  • Dive into the codebase of Cody and Code Intelligence platform, gaining a deep understanding of the existing code, architecture, and dependencies.

📅 Within three months, you will…

  • Implement improvements that result in a measurable reduction in the time it takes to release new versions of Cody and the Code Intelligence platform while higher-level insights on architecture, scalability, and customer focus.
  • Establish strong working relationships with Security teams, ensuring that the release process incorporates necessary security measures.
  • Actively participate in code reviews and discussions to contribute higher-level insights on architecture, scalability, and customer focus.

📅 Within six months, you will…

  • Contribute to the development of a robust and scalable infrastructure for monitoring Cody's quality, performance, and user experience.
  • Implement proactive alerting and monitoring systems to detect issues before they impact customers.

📅 Within one year, you will…

  • Successfully evolve the release process into a mature platform, enabling teams across Sourcegraph to manage their releases independently.
  • Proactively propose additions and changes to the team's roadmap, aligning it with the broader goals of Sourcegraph.

About you

-------------

  • You’re a software engineer first, but you have a passion for working on the boundaries between software and the underlying infrastructure. You might have some past experience as an SRE, developing tooling for other developers, or jumping between the two.
  • You're just as comfortable designing distributed systems as you are methodically debugging a complex performance issue with skills you have honed from years of experience.
  • You understand the software lifecycle, from design, to coding, to docs, as well as the maintenance lifecycle over time. You've experienced it in its entirety at least once in your career.
  • You don't write code for the sake of it, but to provide value to our customers by solving problems.
  • You value integrity and teamwork. Your strong sense of empathy helps you understand your peers' challenges and you sharply understand how to balance solving current and future problems, carving a path to implement your vision. You're able to work effectively across teams to solve complex problems with multiple stakeholders.
  • You understand your role in the company and how you contribute to its success or failures. You have a strong sense of ownership and a healthy sense of urgency. You  understand that this is your company now.
  • Your sense of ownership extends to the software that you ship to your customers. You understand that your code is likely the first impression many customers have of your company, and you often pause to consider the customer experience during development.
  • You do work you are proud of and your work is respected by your peers as well as the broader community.

Skills

  • You're highly proficient at writing Go and likely experienced in other languages as well.
  • You've had experience setting up delivery and build pipelines of various sizes. You know the challenges of shipping software at scale and how to overcome them.
  • You have deep knowledge of Kubernetes, including working and developing with Kubernetes APIs and internals such as CRDs and controllers.
  • Bonus: You have experience with database internals and complex schema migrations.
  • Bonus: You have worked with Bazel or other build systems in large polyglot codebases.

It doesn't matter if you're not an expert on all points, what really counts is that you understand the complexities of releasing software, and thrive to make it a seamless experience for both our customers and our teammates. Ultimately, you can jump in at any point in the software lifecycle and understand how to fix issues.

Why this job is exciting

----------------------------

At Sourcegraph, we see code syncing & storage, code search, and the code graph as big data challenges. We handle tasks like indexing multi-terabyte monorepos, querying and searching clusters of hundreds of thousands of repos, providing fast & high-quality ranking, and extracting a code graph which is used throughout our products.

+ a hybrid search architecture which combines modern ML and traditional search techniques for natural language search

+ extending our code graph to cover an ever growing set of languages with every easier configuration

+ a scalable system for syncing any type of data relevant for Cody or Code Search data

📅 Within six months, you will…

  • Champion customer engagement in all phases of design, development and deployment.

📅 Within one year, you will…

  • Have hired and retained exceptional people to make our team even more representative of the world’s population.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to develop the next set of ambitious goals that your org should work towards.
  • Develop a clear technical and execution strategy to achieve that next set of goals.

About you

-------------

You may not code everyday, but you are eager to jump into the code for anything from answering a customer question to fixing a bug to adding some new functionality.

Qualifications:

Working hours

-----------------

🌎 Given that we are an all-remote company and hire almost anywhere in the world, we don’t have a particular time-zone preference for this role. However, you may need to be available for non-recurring urgent meetings outside of working hours.

Why this job is exciting

----------------------------

We are creating a machine learning team at Sourcegraph, aimed at creating the most powerful coding assistant in the world. Many companies are trying, but Sourcegraph is uniquely differentiated by our rich code intelligence data and powerful code search platform. In the world of prompting LLMs, context is everything, and Sourcegraph’s context is simply the best you can get: IDE-quality, global-scale, and served lightning fast. Our code intelligence, married with modern AI, is already providing a remarkable alpha experience, and you can help us unlock its full potential.

We are looking for an experienced full stack ML engineer with demonstrated industry experience in productionizing large scale ML models in industrial settings. And if you happen to have an entrepreneurial streak, you’re in luck:  We have an enterprise distribution pipeline, so whatever you build can be deployed straight to enterprise customers with some of the largest code bases in the world, without all the go-to-market hassle you’d encounter in a startup.

You will be a scientist at Sourcegraph Labs doing R&D, and pushing the boundaries of what AI can do, as an IC on our new ML team. You will have the full power of Sourcegraph’s Code Intelligence Platform at your disposal, and you’ll be working on a coding assistant that is already awesome even after just a few weeks of work, so this is a greenfield opportunity to multiply dev productivity to unprecedented levels.

📅 Within one month, you will…

  • Start building a trusting relationship with your peers, and learning the company structure.
  • Be set up to do local development, and be actively prototyping, and dive deep into how AI and ML is already used at Sourcegraph and identify ways to improve moving forward.
  • Start informing the design of ML infra/platform to support deploying of large scale ML models
  • Develop simulated datasets using Gym style frameworks across a number of Cody use cases.
  • Experiment with changes to Cody prompts, context sources and evaluate the changes with offline experimentation datasets.
  • Ship a substantial new feature to end users.

📅 Within three months, you will…

  • Be seen as a subject matter expert in all things ML at Sourcegraph.
  • Be developing and executing the overall ML infra strategy to maximize impact of ML for Cody users.
  • Be ensuring the adoption of best practices in machine learning model development and experimentation.
  • Building out feature computation, storage, monitoring, analysis and serving systems for features required across our Cody LLM stack
  • Developing distributed training & experiment infrastructure over Code AI datasets, and scaling distributed backend services to reliably support high-QPS low latency use cases.
  • Be following all the relevant research, and conducting research of your own.

📅 Within six months, you will…

  • Be driving the technical vision and owning the overall modeling and ML infra roadmap for context ranking and LLM inference for Cody
  • Be fully ramped up and owning key pieces of the assistant, and  other relevant parts of the Sourcegraph product.
  • Be helping design and build what might become the biggest dev accelerator in 20 years.

About you

-------------

You are an experienced full stack ML engineer with demonstrated industry experience in formulating ML solutions, developing end to end data orchestration pipelines, deploying large scale ML models and experimenting offline and online to drive business impact for Cody users. You want to be part of a world-class team to push the boundaries of AI, with a particular focus on leveraging Sourcegraph’s code intelligence to leapfrog competitors.

First, your AI background could look like a few different things:

  • Demonstrated ability to design, build and scale ML training and inference services.
  • Developing and maintaining distributed training, inference and experimentation infrastructure
  • Experience with taking advantage of state of the art accelerators (TPUs, GPUs) to scale distributed training jobs
  • Experience with ML orchestration using Airflow, Flyte or similar frameworks
  • Developing a high-throughput inference engine providing low latency performance using a mix of CPU and GPU hardware
  • Building core data and model metadata systems powering the end-to-end ML lifecycle, and advancing the usage of ML monitoring and observability
  • You have some hands-on experience working with large foundational models and their toolkits. Familiarity with LLMs such as Llama, StarCoder etc., model fine-tuning techniques (LORA, QLORA), prompting techniques (Chain of Thought, ReACT, etc) and model evaluation.

Second, you have some understanding of programming languages, and tools that manipulate code. This could have taken any number of forms; e.g.:

  • You’ve worked with grammars and parser generators, or Treesitter
  • You’ve worked with compilers and semantic analysis, e.g. type systems
  • You’ve written an interpreter, or worked on a virtual machine
  • You’ve done static analysis involving scanning source code for semantic information

It doesn’t really matter how you know it, but it’s important that you’re familiar with the basic concepts of semantic representations of source code, and how they’re produced and consumed by tooling.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 6+ years of industry experience with a solid understanding of engineering, infrastructure and ML best practices
  • Industry experience building end-to-end ML infrastructure is mandatory
  • Hands-on experience training and serving large-scale (10GB+) models using frameworks such as Tensorflow or PyTorch
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Kubeflow, knowledge of CI/CD in the context of ML pipelines is a plus
  • Experience with CUDA, model compilers, and other model-specific optimizations.
  • Experience with LLM inference latency optimization techniques, e.g. kernel fusion, quantization, dynamic batching is a big plus

If you’ve been anywhere near the field lately, you can probably pick up enough about LLM capabilities to be able to drive this space, as it’s all greenfield.

We believe in the importance of 'Getting Sh!t Done'

When it comes to proving the value we provide for our customers, we choose to “show, not tell.”

We believe In learning and the power of “yet”

We believe In learning and the power of “yet”

We believe that through curiosity and dedication to learning we can overcome challenges, build skills and create solutions that are not possible . . . yet.

We believe starting from first principles gives us the courage to think differently.

We believe starting from first principles gives us the courage to think differently.

We always rely on a first principles approach to understand and solve problems. Once we build conviction in what is true, we build a solution from that foundation.

We believe being human means recognizing the humanity in ourselves and others.

We believe being human means recognizing the humanity in ourselves and others.

We create a positive impact on the world, beginning with taking good care of ourselves, our families, our teammates, our customers and our communities.

We believe businesses don’t have problems, people do.

We believe businesses don’t have problems, people do.

We solve for the needs of the individuals who work for our customers by developing empathy for what they think, feel, say and do.

Be Boomi

Be Boomi

We build communities of good humans.

We show up for each other with empathy, compassion and purpose.

We strive to integrate a more diverse voice for a stronger and smarter team.

We win as One Boomi.
Be You

Be You

We lead with integrity.

We bring our whole, unique and authentic selves to our work and relationships with ourselves, our customers, our partners and our communities.
Be Bold

Be Bold

We take ownership for the work we do as individuals and the results they bare.

We commit to continuously being better.

We strive to exceed our customers, partners and community's expectations.

Our curiosity drives us to do better.

We are inspired by yesterday, but create for tomorrow.
Direct & transparent

Direct & transparent

We communicate directly and operate transparently (internally) by default, which helps us move fast and make good decisions. We proactively give and receive candid feedback out of respect for each other. We respond positively to directness and transparency because the alternative is worse: not hearing feedback, waiting longer to hear the same information, or having less valuable input into a decision. We are willing to disagree and commit.
Win together

Win together

Each of us is an owner here in two ways: of our work and of the company (as team members and shareholders). We all win only if the entire company wins, which calls for the right balance of collaboration and ownership. Too little collaboration causes chaos and brings disappointing results. Too much collaboration crushes ownership and dulls outcomes. As owners of the company, we speak up when something is wrong (even when it’s hard) and help create an environment where we respectfully consider every voice.
High agency

High agency

If all Sourcegraph teammates, except for one, got stranded on a desert island without internet access for a month, we know that person would figure out how to keep Sourcegraph running and serving our customers. We are self-motivated. Everyone here has a high degree of autonomy and freedom, which requires hard work, responsibility, initiative, fast iteration, and optimism in the face of challenges. We think and act like owners of our work and hold each other accountable to do the same so we can do the best work of our lives.
Dev love

Dev love

Everything we do is ultimately for devs (anyone who codes). Every dollar we earn comes from devs trying, using, loving, fighting for, and sharing our product. All Sourcegraph teammates code to better understand our users and customers and to do their job better (in ways that make sense for their role). Our long-term mission is to make it so everyone codes, not just the 0.1% of the world’s population who are devs—just like universal literacy.
Ownership

Ownership

Doing WHATEVER IT TAKES

Everyone is an owner at Starburst and has the autonomy to make a significant impact on where we are today and where we are going. Regardless of the role you perform here, we want drivers. If you see something that can be improved, don’t wait for someone else to improve it. Every employee has equity and this is truly your company – and ours.
Competence

Competence

Inclusive Meritocracy

As individuals, we are constantly striving to master our craft and give our best as we get things done. While individual contributions are recognized and rewarded, we also work to build an inclusive meritocracy across the entire organization where accountability is key. Character

Humility, Grit and Authenticity

Through it all, we are authentic in everything we do and always operate with honesty.

Working Together Towards A Higher Purpose
The Journey Fulfills Us

The Journey Fulfills Us

While we seek to find fulfillment through our work, we also know that this work is just part of our lives. We seek to find a balance so that we can enjoy life day by day, accomplishing goals and great things together along the way, but not at the expense of our overall happiness and enjoyment. We work with talented and fascinating people with a voracious curiosity to learn from one another. Take the time to appreciate one another, celebrate our accomplishments, and find enjoyment in the opportunity to work together. In the end, the journey is where we will have spent our time together – not the destination. The journey is an end in itself.
Respect Elevates Us

Respect Elevates Us

It’s a great thing to work with people you respect. It’s a great thing to be respected. We try to find and encourage the best in one another, while accepting our differences, and respecting individuality. We seek to produce work that perpetuates and amplifies this respect. When we respect one another, we can collaborate better, trusting that the care and efforts we have put into our work will be appreciated. We trust and have faith in the intent and capabilities of one another. We recognize that our unique perspectives and skills make our products and services more robust. Our diversity makes us stronger. Our deep respect for one another sets a standard and drives us. Empower one another. Appreciate one another.
Hard Work Differentiates Us

Hard Work Differentiates Us

We strive to accomplish tremendous things. While we are always seeking better ways of working, we also acknowledge that, most often, great accomplishments require a great amount of work. Our accomplishments give us confidence and encouragement to accomplish more. We expect our work to speak for itself, showing our clients and those around us how capable and driven we can be when the work requires it. In addition to working hard, we also seek to work smart, finding and reducing barriers for ourselves and our clients. Our persistence and our ability to identify and focus on what matters is what truly differentiates us. We support one another and understand that it’s the sum of our collective work that truly matters.
Learning Inspires Us

Learning Inspires Us

For many people, learning is a means to an end. For us, learning is a goal in itself. We are constantly striving for better. Better ways to create. Better ways to connect. Better ways to be fulfilled. We identify and admit what we don’t know as an opportunity to learn from one another. We open ourselves to new ideas and information. We endeavor to share our knowledge and experience with one another so that we can grow both individually and as a collective. Be curious. Be vulnerable. Find empathy. Seek understanding.
