AI applications and agents are foundational to our suite of solutions. We move fast, stay close to our customers, experiment constantly, and believe in launching, learning, and iterating quickly. We’re a small and experienced team with former leaders of companies like Mosaic, IDEO, and New Energy Nexus.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced VP of Engineering to lead our technical team and drive the development of our AI-powered applications in the climate finance space. You will be responsible for the overall technical strategy, execution, delivery, and maintenance of our products. This role requires a seasoned leader with 10+ years of experience in both AI and full-stack engineering, who can build, mentor, and manage a high-performing team including in-house and out-sourced developers. You will be instrumental in shaping our engineering culture, processes, and architecture.

Core Responsibilities

Lead and manage our nascent, rapidly growing engineering team, including hiring, mentoring, and performance.

● Develop and execute the overall technical strategy and roadmap for Ezra.

● Oversee the design, development, and deployment of full-stack applications that integrate LLMs and other AI services.

● Ensure the implementation and fine-tuning of our full AI pipeline(s) including RAG systems.

● Ensure reliability, security, and scalability of our products.

Required Skills & Experience

10+ years of experience in full-stack web development with recent focus on AI/ML engineering.

● Proven track record of leading and managing engineering teams, starting with the scrappy early-stage phase.

● Extensive experience integrating AI/ML services via APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.).

● Deep understanding of large language model APIs, prompt engineering, and LLM workflow design.

● Experience with modern web stacks and frameworks (React, Node, or similar) and API development.

● Strong system design and architecture skills.

● Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

● Experience in hiring, mentoring, and developing engineering talent.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with financial data and documents.

● Experience with RAG implementations and vector databases.

● Experience with agentic AI platforms and tools such as LlamaIndex, LangChain, LangFlow, Dify, Braintrust, or others.

● Experience deploying AI/ML software to cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, Fly.io, Heroku, or others.

● Understanding of security best practices for financial applications.

● Experience in fintech and/or climate tech.

You'll Excel in This Role If You

Enjoy the earliest stages of building a company and products including rapid prototyping to finding product-market fit.

● Enjoy a wide range of engineering areas including front-end, full-stack, back-end, and AI pipelines.

● Enjoy scaling up tech infrastructure and teams as a company goes into growth mode.

● Are a strategic thinker and can develop a long-term technical vision.

● Have a passion for building and leading high-performing teams.

● Enjoy a balance of strategic planning and hands-on technical leadership.

● Are passionate about climate finance and sustainability.

● Enjoy solving complex problems with cutting-edge technology.

Our Development Philosophy

We believe in moving fast and learning from our customers. Our ideal candidate is someone who:

● Takes ownership of projects and drives them forward independently, but asks for help and collaborates with the rest of the team seamlessly.

● Gets excited about building quick prototypes to test ideas.

● Is comfortable making technical decisions autonomously, but bringing the leadership team along at the same time.

● Values customer feedback and can incorporate it quickly into solutions.

● Can balance speed of delivery with code quality.

● Enjoys the energy of a fast-moving startup environment.

What We Offer

High autonomy and ownership of your work.

● Fast-paced, experimental environment where you can see your ideas come to life quickly.

● Direct access to customers and immediate feedback on your work.

Role overview

CarGurus is looking for a Senior UX Designer to craft intuitive, visually compelling, and high-performing experiences across our product ecosystem. You’ll join a collaborative team of designers, researchers, and writers working closely with product and engineering to solve meaningful customer and business problems.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, works independently, and takes full ownership of their design process-from framing the problem to delivering polished, well-rationalized solutions. While you'll typically work under the guidance of a Lead Designer who sets direction and provides mentorship, you're expected to operate as a trusted partner in your area, collaborating deeply across disciplines and pushing work forward with confidence and clarity.

We deploy designers flexibly across product lines based on their strengths, interests, and the organization's needs. You may be embedded in a specific area or rotate between projects depending on impact and opportunity.

This is also a pivotal time at CarGurus as we explore how AI and emerging technologies will reshape both our tools and our user experiences. We’re looking for someone who’s not only aware of these trends but excited to help define how they’re applied—someone eager to experiment with AI-assisted workflows, smart content tools, and new patterns of interaction.

An online portfolio or access to work samples is required to apply.

What you'll do

  • Design end-to-end user experiences across CarGurus product areas, balancing customer needs, business goals, and technical feasibility
  • Collaborate with engineers, PMs, researchers, and content designers to define problems, generate ideas, iterate quickly, and deliver impactful outcomes
  • Work with autonomy and accountability-navigating ambiguity, framing design questions, and making thoughtful decisions with minimal oversight
  • Conduct your own user research and usability testing as needed, with coordination support from our centralized UX research team
  • Lead or participate in design-thinking workshops to explore opportunities, align teams, and generate solutions
  • Create user flows, wireframes, visual designs, and prototypes grounded in evidence and tested with users
  • Apply customer insights, experimentation, and data to inform and improve your work
  • Contribute to and evolve our design systems to ensure consistency and quality
  • Leverage emerging tools and AI workflows to improve design efficiency, ideation, and content generation
  • Communicate clearly and proactively across teams, helping shape a collaborative, high-energy design culture

What you'll bring

  • 6+ years of experience in UX/product design with a strong portfolio showcasing both interaction and visual design excellence
  • Proficiency in Figma and a working knowledge of modern design systems
  • A self-starting, problem-solving mindset with comfort working in uncertain or evolving spaces
  • Experience with user research, usability testing, and design validation methods
  • Interest and deep familiarity in AI-enabled design tools, content automation, and emerging design methods
  • Strong understanding of accessibility principles and how to apply them in your work
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills - you’re productive, curious, and generous with ideas and feedback

Compensation

The estimated base salary range for this role is $138,876 - $190,954. In addition to your base salary, Metronome offers a competitive total rewards package, including but not limited to, market-benched equity, sales incentive pay (for eligible roles), comprehensive health benefits, and other benefits listed below.

The actual base salary will vary based on factors including market value, individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process, and previous experience. The listed range above should serve as a guideline and may be modified at any time.

We believe that compensation reflects the expected impact you will have at the company, relative to the market value of your role. We also conduct an annual pay audit to ensure pay is fair, indexed to market value, and that pay takes into account continued performance at Metronome.
